This is without question one of the premier art shows in the city, and it is all put on by first graders at Heritage Hall and all for a good cause.

It’s a process that started at the beginning of the school year for the first graders. “They learn about Van Gogh, Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Georgia O’Keeffe,” said Heritage Hall first-grade teacher Margarett Murray.

While the students were mimicking art in art class they were also learning about the artist in the classrooms. “They can answer any of the questions you have about those four artists,” said Murray.

“Vincent van Gogh, he painted a lot of stuff and he died when he was only thirty-seven years old,” said first-grade student Ryan.

As families came to see the art, the students were in place and ready. “I was excited, and I was happy to perform my art show,” said first-grade student Anderson.

“The kids get to be their docent or their tour guide and show them to each classroom and tell them about each of the artists that they have learned about,” said Murray.

An extremely busy day for these first-graders “I’ve already done two morning ones, but soon I’m going to have to do my afternoon,” said first-grader Gabe.

All the money raised goes to a school in Ghana. “Because we are donating, and the kids are happy about it,” said Anderson.

“It’s for the school in Ghana to buy school surprises,” said Gabe.

Reporter Wait, buy what?

“Wait why did I say surprise I meant school supplies,” said Gabe.

Quality art like this goes for a premium price. “Maybe like fifty,” said Anderson. “Fifty,” said Ryan. “If we got to choose? I’d probably say thirty-five dollars,” said Gabe.

The really cool thing about the day is the kids learn about the artist and learn about helping others, and that is always something good.
